Лексикон
Gellert Grindelwald

Gellert Grindelwald was the wildly brilliant Dark Wizard that Dumbledore was famous for defeating, but also Dumbledore’s erstwhile friend. The two teens met in 1899 just after Dumbledore finished Hogwarts.

DATES & NAME ORIGINS :
Birthdate: c.1883 (two years younger than Dumbledore) (DH18).
Deathdate: 1998; killed while in Nurmengard Prison by Voldemort (DH23). Grindelwald's fate in Deathly Hallows directly contradicts a statement by J.K. Rowling in 2005 that Grindelwald died in 1945 (WEB LINKTLC pt. 3).
First name meaning: A possible source for the name has been suggested by Lexicon reader Olive Campion:

When I was younger I read a terribly sad story called 'Hound Gelert' (it is spelled with one 'l' in this case), which I remembered all my life. It is an aetiological story, as in it explains the name of a place. It's about a legendary Welsh prince called Llywelyn who had a hunting dog called Gelert, with whom he was best friends and whom he took everywhere. You can read it here: http://www.valleystream.co.uk/gelert.htm. That is essentially how I remember it, only in the version I read, Llywelyn already had Gelert as a hunting dog before he got married, and he deliberately left Gelert to look after the baby because he trusted Gelert more than anyone else, and he then returned home to find the scene as described.

I know Grindelwald the wizard isn't much like a faithful hound in character, but Llywelyn's situation had aspects that reminded me of Dumbledore: having to attack - in this story, kill - his best friend; perceived betrayal; blame/guilt for the death of a family member - although in the Hound Gelert story the family member wasn't dead; and never being truly happy again after that.

It is also possible that the name refers to Bishop Gellért of Budapest (980-1046) who was martyred in a pagan Magyar revolt against Christianity. A hill, cave and four-star hotel in Budapest are named for him.

Last name meaning: 'Grindelwald' is a small village in the Alps of Switzerland. The name could also refer to Grendel, the troll-like monster of the Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf. Jo pronounces Grindelwald's name “GRIN dell vald” (WEB LINKTLC pt. 3).

FAMILY
Ancestry: Probably pureblood.
Great-aunt: Bathilda Bagshot, the author of A History of Magic (DH).
Relationships: Albus Dumbledore fell in love with Gellert when Albus was 17, but was “terribly let down by him” when he realized what Gellert was capable of (CH2).

APPEARANCE
Hair: Blonde, curly shoulder-length hair (DH13).
Characteristics: A wild, gleeful look about him (DH13).

WAND, ETC.
Wand: The Elder Wand, one of the three Deathly Hallows, which he stole from the wandmaker Gregorovitch.
School: Brilliant student at Durmstrang, but expelled c. 1899 (DH18).
Career: Attempted to establish wizard supremacy over Muggles, but was defeated and imprisoned for the rest of his life.
Incarceration: From 1945-1998 at Nurmengard, prison he had built for his own political enemies (DH18).

PROFILE by Michele Worley and Lisa Bunker
Two years younger than Albus Dumbledore (DH18), as a teenager Gellert was blond, wore his curly hair shoulder-length, and had a wild, gleeful look about him (DH13).

Grindelwald was a brilliant student at Durmstrang Institute, but was expelled at the age of 16, at which point he chose to go abroad for a few months, moving in with his great-aunt Bathilda Bagshot in Godric's Hollow (DH18) because he was fascinated by the legend of the Deathly Hallows and wanted to explore the place where Ignotus Peverell had died and was buried (DH35). During his stay in Godric's Hollow, Gellert became very close with then 18-year-old Albus Dumbledore, and drew the latter into his plans for world domination. Together they theorized about Wizard supremacy “For the Greater Good” of the world, and how to find the three Deathly Hallows: The Elder Wand, the Cloak of Invisibility, and the Resurrection Stone. However, their relationship lasted mere months; Grindelwald fled when Albus’s unstable sister Ariana was killed during a quarrel, and Dumbledore realized his folly (DH18, DH28).

During his subsequent rise to power as a Dark wizard, Gellert built a prison, Nurmengard, to hold his opponents, over the door of which the slogan “For the Greater Good” was carved (DH18). Although he was well aware of Grindelwald's abuses of power and evil actions, Dumbledore avoided having to confront his former friend because he was afraid Grindelwald would tell him who it was that had cast the spell that killed Ariana -- and Dumbledore was terrified that it might have been him. However, Dumbledore eventually had to try to stop Grindelwald, even at great person cost.

The spectacular final battle between Dumbledore and Grindelwald took place in 1945, the final year of World War Two, and the year that Voldemort finished Hogwarts. In the end, Dumbledore won the duel and took Grindelwald’s wand, the Elder Wand of Deathly Hallows fame. This battle was such a notable event that it is featured on Dumbledore's Chocolate Frog card as one of the three things Dumbledore is particularly famous for (PS6). Grindelwald was imprisoned in Nurmengard (DH18), where he remained until his murder by Voldemort in 1998 (DH23).

Nurmengard
Building Witches & Wizards
Europe
A towering, "jet-black" wizarding prison built by Gellert Grindelwald to hold his enemies, Nurmengard is a forbidding place (DH18, DH23). Carved over the entrance is Grindelwald's grim mantra: "For the Greater Good" (DH18). And when Grindelwald was defeated by Albus Dumbledore in 1945, he himself was placed in the topmost cell of the tower, held captive for over fifty years (DH18, DH24) where he eventually began to show some remorse (DH35). Finally, in 1998, Voldemort sought Grindelwald out here, looking for information on the Elder Wand, and killed him (DH23).

Durmstrang Institute
Headmasters: Nerida Vulchanova (founder), Harfang Munter, Igor Karkaroff (until fleeing in 1995)
Location: a castle in northern Europe, far enough north that days are very short in winter
Uniform: furs, blood-red robes

The Durmstrang Intitute also has a castle, not as tall as Hogwarts, having only four floors, but having a larger student population (Pm). Its fires are only lit for magical purposes, or so Viktor Krum claimed. The grounds are quite extensive and include lakes and mountains (GF23).

Durmstrang has the reputation of teaching duelling and other martial magic. During some periods of its history, it has also gained the reputation for teaching the Dark Arts, and during the Headmastership of Igor Karkaroff (c. early 1990s) did not admit Muggle-born students (GF11). Gellert Grindelwald was a student here once, and he carved "his" symbol - actually the symbol representing the Deathly Hallows - into one of the walls, where it remains today (DH8).

For more information see the essay, Languages at Durmstrang.

The name Durmstrang comes from the German phrase "Sturm und Drang" which translates to "Storm and Stress." The phrase refers to a movement in German literature in the late 1700s which emphasized "subjectivity and the unease of man in contemporary society" ( WEB LINKThe Columbia Encyclopedia). In the film, it is implied that Durmstrang is an all-boys school, but this is not canon.

Languages at Durmstrang
by Eric Oppen

Do we ever find out what the language of instruction used at Durmstrang Institute is? At Beauxbatons it would have to be French, but although "Durmstrang" sounds German, the Durmstrang students we meet are all of Slavic ancestry as far as we know.

On the one hand, German continues to be sort of a "lingua franca" in a lot of Eastern Europe; this is a relic of the days when most of the cities and towns were mainly German-speaking, and Slavic, Romanian and Magyar were the dialects of peasants. For a long, long time, up till the end of WWII, a lot of the professional classes and middle-classes in Eastern and Southeastern Europe were German-speaking, and I'm told that to this day, German is a good language to know if you don't know the local speech in these areas---still more widespread than English.

On the other hand, the only Durmstrang types we get to meet have Slavic-sounding names (although this, in itself, doesn't necessarily mean much; there was a lot more movement between countries in Eastern Europe than most people are aware of in the U.S.) so the language used may be one of the Slavic tongues. Since many of these languages have high default rates (for example, if you know, say, Polish, you have a big leg up on learning Russian and Czech) they could require that students coming in from backgrounds that do not speak the language of instruction must first master at least enough of Durmstrang's language of instruction to be able to follow along in lessons, even if they speak with horrendous accents.

Durmstrang could well have been founded by German-speaking wizards about the same time Hogwarts was founded, but now, thanks to Muggle politics, be dominated to such an extent by Slavic-speakers that the language of instruction itself has changed. Hogwarts might have had similar problems far in the past, since it was apparently founded before 1066; when you've got students who speak Gaelic, Anglo-Saxon dialects, Norse and Norman French all in one school, you've got to pick out one language and stick with it, however, in those days, the default compromise would certainly have been Latin, as it was in monastic schools.
